Homeowner Guide: Drawer Won’t Close Right? Here’s How to Fix It

A drawer that sticks, sags, or won’t close all the way is one of the most common cabinet problems — and usually one of the easiest to fix. Before you assume you need a whole new drawer box, the issue is often just the slide mechanism, a loose screw, or something as simple as an item caught behind the drawer.

Common Causes of a Sticking or Misaligned Drawer

  • Worn out or bent drawer slides
  • Loose mounting screws on the slide or the cabinet frame
  • Drawer overloaded beyond its weight capacity
  • Debris or an item blocking the slide track
  • Drawer box slightly out of square

How to Fix It, Step by Step

  1. Remove the drawer completely and inspect both slide rails (the one attached to the drawer and the one attached to the cabinet) for bends, rust, or visible damage.
  2. Check that all mounting screws are tight — both on the cabinet side and the drawer side. Loose screws are the most common cause of a wobbly or misaligned drawer.
  3. Clean the slide track with a dry cloth, then apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant (avoid oil-based products, which attract dust and grime).
  4. Reinsert the drawer and test it. If it’s still misaligned, most modern slides have small adjustment screws that let you shift the drawer up, down, left, or right.
  5. If the slide itself is bent or damaged beyond adjustment, replace it with a matching model — bring the old slide or its length and weight rating to the store to find the right match.
  6. Avoid overloading the drawer beyond its rated capacity, which is usually printed on the slide or listed in the product specs.

When to Replace Instead of Repair

If your drawer slides are more than 10-15 years old, or if you notice consistent binding even after cleaning and adjusting, it’s often more cost-effective to replace the slides entirely rather than keep repairing an aging mechanism. Upgrading to soft-close or full-extension slides at the same time is a popular improvement, since it also makes the drawer easier to use day to day.
